Education can greatly help farmers make more informed and accurate management decisions. Research indicates higher levels of education can lead to improved profitability for farm businesses. Rural industry needs managers who have acquired analytical,decision-making skills through formal education, as well as strong practical skills developed from years of on-the-job training. Young farmers aspiring to be future leaders acknowledge the value of completing tertiary studies. Unfortunately, many potential agricultural students lack confidence to undertake formal education. How can rural industry encourage its young farmers to participate in, and benefit from, education? Students beginning tertiary studies are often concerned about how they will perform and whether they have the intelligence and capability to complete their diploma or degree. For some, memories of schooldays bring back unpleasant thoughts of boredom and irrelevance.
