ALMOST two hundred years ago, a small wooden ship, under the command of the young and newly married Lieutenant Matthew Flinders, set sail on a voyage of discovery from the English port of Spithead. This was the Investigator and the main object of theexpedition was to chart the northern and southern coasts of New Holland to determine whether it was a single continent or a group of islands.
