The trade bridge across the Tasman - commonly known as Closer Economic Relations - is taking a bit of a pounding right now. Free trade? Yes. Fair trade? Hardly. When it comes to wine it's increasingly one sided, not in favour of the bigger, stronger Aussies, it should be noted, but rather the Kiwis who are a-whooping it up across Oz plundering sales and capturing hearts. Last year, for the first time in almost 20 years, Chardonnay was toppled from its top-selling white wine position in Australia. The culprit? Sauvignon Blanc, driven, of course by the off-the-chart success of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Aussie sav blanc just makes up the numbers, it is New Zealand savvy calling the tune.
