Moving hundreds of thousands of tonnes of supplies and equipment to remote resource projects looms as a serious bottleneck, with the demand for heavy road transport expected to increase by 30% in the near future. In Western Australia, where several hundred billion dollars is being invested in ventures ranging from natural gas and iron ore, to gold, industry leaders warn that shortages of vehicles and, more particularly drivers, could create more delays and rising costs. Holdups are being caused by the need for special arrangements to move loads of up to 200 tonnes along highways designed only for conventional traffic.
