IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD RUSH

It's very easy to think of all the great gold discoveries of the 19th century simply as the gold rush', as though it were a singular event. Many people, even noted historians, do lump them together in this way but there were actually a great number of individual rushes. This story concerns some of the biggest and most frantic of them all; those that took place in and around Dunolly during the 1850s and '60s. I use the word 'frantic' quite deliberately because it well describes a rush. Even words like 'frenzied' and 'demented' wouldn't be too wide of the mark. The results of these chaotic scrambles for gold were sometimes dramatic and often hilarious.
