Qualman speaks to Island cattlemen

Beef producers in Prince Edward Island have received all the problems associated with an export-driven industry without sharing in any of the benefits. That was the assessment Darrin Qualman offered to a group of close to 65 people that braved the elements when the NFU research director held a meeting to garner feedback on a report he prepared on the national cattle industry. His research showed prices to producers began to decline in the late 1980s, when free trade and a lower Canadian dollar encouraged industry to begin to focus on exports.
