As the fall days get shorter, so does the grass in most pastures. One of the greatest economic benefits from grazing management is the ability to ration feed out for the periods of slow or no growth, such as a drought or during winter. For most beef cows, calves are weaned by late October when fall grazing is typically done, so the energy needs of the cow are not that high. In fact, stockpiled pasture or hayfields are a perfect match for the protein and energy needs of a dry beef cow.
