Poor Interim Business Performances of Large-Scale Retailers

Consolidated financial results for the interim accounting period ending August 2002 (July for Tokyu Department Store Co., Ltd.) of six major department-store firms showed lower sales and lower profits except for Kintetsu Department Store Co., Ltd. Each firm strived for the strengthening of its mainstay business. Nevertheless, severe conditions continued. With the slackening in consumption, corporate demand dipped remarkably. A recovery of sales was attempted by renovating stores, but the outcome was harsh. Consolidated higher sales of Kintetsu Department Store came from an increase in a consolidated subsidiary.
