The reinsurance industry experienced one of the costliest years ever in 2011. Faced with mounting losses as a result of climate change, reinsurers have become some of the most vocal advocates of curbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Last year was one of the costliest for the reinsurance industry, spurred by a series of devastating earthquakes, floods and severe storms. The link between anomalous weather and climate change is not yet proven beyond doubt, but the reinsurance industry has become acutely sensitive to the possibility.
