China tops CO2 emissions league

Global CO2 emissions rose by 3pc last year to a record 34bn t CO2 equivalent (CO2e), according to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and Dutch environmental assessment agency PBL. China's per person CO2 emissions rose by 9pc to 7.2t CO2e, just below the EU's per person emissions, which fell by 3pc to 7.5t CO2e, according to the annual Trends in Global CO2 Emissions report published by the two institutes. China is now well within the 6-19t CO2e per person range spanned by the major industrialised countries, the report says.
