Pipeline imports pose competition to LNG

The proportion of LNG in China’s total gas imports was relatively steady in January-June compared with the same period in 2012, despite increased access to cheaper pipeline supplies. But pipeline imports are likely to account for a larger share of the country’s gas supply in the next few years as major pipelines start up and as China seeks to diversify its supply sources. LNG made up 46.9pc of China’s gas imports in the first six months of this year — a marginal decline from 47.7pc in the first half of 2012. Pipeline gas consequently increased its share over the period, rising to 53.1pc from 52.3pc.
