A raft of new LNG vessels scheduled for completion in the next few years is expected to result in the decommissioning of older tankers or their modification into floating facilities, Bermuda-based shipping firm Golar LNG’s chief executive, Doug Arnell, says. Older ships accounting for 10pc of current fleet capacity of around 380 vessels will be retired, laid up or converted to floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) or floating LNG facilities when the new vessels are delivered. This is likely to offset 30-40pc of the new vessels arriving on the market, Arnell says. It will also restore some balance to the market, as the start-up of new liquefaction capacity will be staggered over the next decade, Arnell adds.
