In RWE Power AG's opencast mines, lignite is extracted using large-scale mining equipment. In addition to bucket-wheel excavators (BWE) and spreaders, this includes reclaimers in the coal bunkers. During operation, it must be possible to vary the boom height of the equipment as well as to accommodate the loads that occur. This is done with the aid of multiple reeved wire ropes that are guided over several rope pulleys, compensating pulleys and rope drums (Figure 1). The block and tackle principle is used to reduce both the rope force and the drive torque of the hoisting winches. However, a durable design of wire ropes is not possible due to the complex states of stress that occur within wire ropes as well as external environmental influences.
