Force Distribution in the Working Gap of High-Pressure Roller Presses and its Effect on their Torque and Operating Performance

High-pressure roller presses are highly effective machines for comminution. In 20 years, their application has spread worldwide for grinding cement clinker, ore and a range of minerals. The high-pressure roller press was already a commonly used machine in briquetting and compaction. The theoretical basis for its new application in comminution has been essentially researched in the work of Prof. Schonert and his students. The operating performance of these machines has shown that they are capable of a high capacity utilization over time (92 percent of calendar time). Despite this, they can sometimes demonstrate unstable operation (vibration, chattering; backlash in the gears), which concerns both the suppliers and operators of roller presses. The reasons for his unstable operation are described in this paper. The relationships between the force distribution in the working gap, torque and mu factor of the press are investigated and the development of negative torques is derived from these relationships. Solutions for avoiding such unstable operation are proposed.
