Colorado Blue Spruce as Bonsai

Spruce (Picea) is a well-documented genus of about 35 species of conifers all around the northern regions of the world. Many have been the subject of wonderful specimen bonsai. The spruce variety that grows most prolifically in the Rocky Mountains ofthe United States is the Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens). Colorado Blue Spruce, the state tree of Colorado, is commonly used as a yard tree or Christmas Tree and is seldom, until recently, used for bonsai. There are several reasons for the under-utilization of spruce as bonsai material. It is not as readily collectible as Ponderosa pines, Limber pines, and others of its conifer cousins. And in its natural form is usually very pyramidical in shape and large, often 40, 60 to over 100 feet tall (12,18 to over 30 meters).
