The tantalising prospect of a fleet of hybrid oil tanker/container ships bringing natural gas direct to US consumers courtesy of compressed natural gas (CNG) technolgoy was dangled before the recent OTCF conference in Houston by Norway's Det Norske Veritas (DNV). The ships would serve as both storage and transport vehicles, discharging directly into the land-based gas grid via an offshore discharge terminal, platform or buoys.
