The traditional role of an ink is as a passive communicator of information, such as:product and producer names,ingredients,instructions,price,sell-by date and bar code. This role is changing, and nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the area of intelligent inks,i.e.inks that are reactive, responding to the substrate on which they are applied,or the environment they find themselves and through their response providing information. The growing interest in such inks is driven largely by the demand for information. This short overview looks at some classic examples of commercial, intelligent inks.
