Anew device that screens for breast cancer could enhance early detection up to 3 years earlier. It also promises a painless, radiation-free, and less costly alternative to mammography for women at high risk of the disease. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Singaporean women, with about 1000 women diagnosed with it annually. This is equivalent to about three cases every day, and the number is set to rise further. The number of women diagnosed with breast cancer is increasing at an annual rate of 3%, bringing Singaporean women closer to the infection rate for Western women. Although breast cancer is on the rise, experts believe that the mortality rate can be drastically reduced. The key here is early detection, as up to 98%-99% of patients with breast cancer picked up in the preinvasive stage can be cured.
