One of the most recent striking changes in biomedicai science is the widespread expansion in studies that involve collaboration between multiple groups of investigators. One facet of this profound change is the expansion of reliance upon high throughput and technically complex analyses. While large research centers may have the capacity to develop a wide range of such capabilities in-house, many laboratories even though sizeable, do not possess the resources both in terms of manpower and funding to operate an integrated set of platform technologies. To address user needs, centralized or core facility laboratories, are now commonplace in both academical and commercial institutions. They recognize that they can afford to provide these technologies and the necessary expertise only through centralization.
