Don't know much biology: redux.

As we have previously said on these pages, some surgeons might admit that they "don't know much .. . biology."1 Today, we feel sufficiently humbled to admit that Sam Cooke (Don't Know Much ... Wonderful World) was right, and your Editors are among those surgeons who don't know as much biology as we thought.In this issue, readers will note a case report of sterile tibial cyst and intra-articular granuloma of the knee 6 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with bioabsorbable poly-lactide carbonate (PLC) os-teoconductive interference screws (Calaxo; Smith & Nephew Endoscopy, Andover, MA).2 All complications are unfortunate, but this report is especially disappointing because we had promised our readers that the age of molecular medicine was upon us.3 We believed that the PLC screw was a shining example of what we could expect in the future, for the "C" stands for carbonate, and we believed that the introduction of an interference screw containing osteoconductive, bone-stimulating calciumcarbonate would result in osseous replacement of the screw, a significant improvement over poly L-lactic acid (PLLA) screws, polyglycolic acid (PGA) screws, or screws composed of copolymers of these two, which are the most common materials from which bioabsorbable interference screws are currently made.
