Each plant variety has its own growth cycle. Unless interrupted by some external factor, such as an eager bonsai artist, a plant will grow in a predictable manner producing buds, new growth, flowers, fruits, seeds, extending roots, and going dormant at the time called for by its genetic programming. In temperate zones, the various parts of the growth cycle are triggered by the natural fluctuations of the seasons. Day length, temperature trends, and other factors start certain phases of plant growth and also cause them to terminate at appropriate times. This behavior is obvious to most growers and is an expected part of living in close association with a plant.
