The aim of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound is to reduce fracture healing tune and the likelihood of non-union by delivering micro-mechanical stress to the bone, which stimulates bone healing. The procedure can be used to treat delayed union, non-union and fresh fractures. The treatment is self-administered by the patient at home by placing the ultrasound probe on the skin over the fracture for 20 minutes each day. If the limb is immobilised in a cast, a hole is cut in the cast.
