Cedigaz estimates that the world's proven natural gas reserves totaled 180 trillion cu m as at 1 January 2005,slightly up on the previous year's total of 177.6 trillion cu m(see Table 4 below).Over the past few years,there has been a steady increase in global reserves,since Cedigaz estimated them at 155.9 trillion cu m in January 2000.Over the past five years,therefore,the figure has risen by about 15.5%.The Middle East possessed the world's largest gas reserves,73.3 trillion cu m(40.7% of the total),at the beginning of 2005,followed by the former Soviet Union(FSU)with 57.4 trillion cu m.
