Through the Steel Industry of the Future program, the OIT is partnering with the steel industry to develop more energy efficient technologies and processes. A number of analytical studies sponsored by the program have yielded data that will provide the foundation for future energy savings, productivity improvements and emissions reductions. By analyzing the gap between the theoretical minimum energy requirements for steelmaking processes and the energy consumption levels that can-be achieved using state-of the-art technology, the OIT can estimate the magnitude of the potential energy savings for each process and select research and development projects that address these opportunities. The two steelmaking energy studies already completed, as well as others that are planned, will help guide the OIT and its industry partners in maintaining a portfolio of projects that can impact future steelmaking energy consumption.
