In terms of its share of hydrocarbon production, the Italian energy group Eni thinks it is by far the leading international oil company operating in North Africa. As its Executive Vice-President for North Africa and the Middle East, Mr. Guido Michelotti, told the North Africa Oil & Gas Summit, its domination can be seen in Algeria, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. The company's share of production in the region is running at close to 560,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), whereas no other international company's share of output in North Africa exceeds 200,000 boe/d, according to Eni. In his presentation to the Vienna conference, Mr. Michelotti outlined the following reasons for the leading role played by Eni in this part of the world.
