Masdar's Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant Has Been Connected to Abu Dhabi's Power Grid

The first photovoltaic (PV) solar power plant to have been built in the Gulf region, which has a capacity of 10 MW, was hooked up to the power transmission network of the emirate of Abu Dhabi at the end of May. It was developed by Masdar to support the construction of Masdar City, and the company points out that it will reduce Abu Dhabi's carbon dioxide (C02) emissions by 15,000 tons/year, equivalent to taking 3,300 vehicles per year off the emirate's roads. The plant will also supply electricity to the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology when the latter is completed towards the end of 2009 (AOG, 1 Feb., 2009). Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC), which is responsible for operating and developing the emirate's power distribution network, and the Regulation and Supervision Bureau participated with Masdar in connecting the new power plant to the national grid.
