Volumes down in first week of year

US coal loadings tumbled 27.3pc in the first full week of 2010, the largest year-on-year drop since the economic downturn began in late 2008. The 103,529 carloads last week were off from 142,480 carloads a year prior and 111,903 carloads in the previous week, according to Association of American Railroads data. The worst annual declines in 2009 were for the most part limited to less than 20pc, but this latest week had CSX volume falling below Norfolk Southern (NS) and both western railroads declining sequentially.
