Sonelgaz Planning to Invest 20 Billion in its Gas and Power Activities Up to 2017

Sonelgaz, Algeria's historic gas and power utility, has drawn up a very ambitious investment program for the medium and long term. In an article published in the Algerian newspaper Liberie on 3 January, the company's Chairman, Mr. Noureddine Boutarfa, explained that Sonelgaz was to invest some 20 billion in its gas and power activities between now and 2017. Of that total, about 37%, or 7.5 billion, will be devoted to the construction of thermal power stations running on natural gas and 63% (12.5 billion) to power and gas transmission and distribution. The company's main activities are power generation, transmission and distribution in Algeria and the transportation and distribution of natural gas by pipeline in the domestic market. Its current statutes also give it the possibility of engaging in the marketing of gas and electricity abroad.
