US draft rules add urgency

Ballast water treatment systems and their tortuous progress through the IMO approval process feature regularly in Solutions. In August we showed the current status of 22 systems, since when at least one newcomer - Crystal Ballast from Auramarine, of Turku, Finland - has entered the fray. The new system is based around UV treatment and could be commercially available by the end of next year. Heikki Saaros, Auramarine's MD, told Solutions that the system will begin land-based testing in Norway by the end of this year and shipboard testing is planned for the second quarter of 2010.
