Aspen Power sells Texas biomass power plant

US firm Aspen Power has sold its 50MW biomass-fired power plant in Lufkin, Texas, for around $5mn to an undisclosed buyer. The plant was mothballed earlier this year because of poor power market economics. It consumes around 500,000 t/yr of wood chips and locally sourced wood waste. The Lufkin plant’s boiler can burn most woody biomass fuels with “limited modification”, but is built to burn wood waste, sales representative Certus Financial said. Fuel for the plant will be sourced within a 50 mile radius, it said.
