Eight biomass-powered thermoelectric plants sold 67.2MW of power in Brazil′s alternative energy auction this week. The plants sold power for an average price of R$209.91/ MWh ($72.63/MWh), a 2.36pc discount on the R215/MW ceiling price. Three of the plants will deliver power to the grid starting on 1 January 2016 and the remaining six will deliver power to the grid from January 2017. A total of 29 biomass projects were approved by the government to participate in the auction, Wind projects sold only 29.7MW, largely because of the more strict requirements established by the government for participation in the auction.
