摘要

We read with great interest the original article by Hennessey et al published in the August 2010 issue of Annals of Surgery. The article is very informative, with some insight into the risk factors for the development of surgical site infection (SSI) after gastrointestinal surgery, nevertheless several criticisms of this article should be addressed. First, the authors might have provided the incorrect reference for their definition of SSI. The authors defined SSI as infection occurring in an incisional wound within 30 days of the procedure or within 1 year if prosthesis is implanted, with reference to the article by Sungurtekin et al. After some thorough review, we discovered that Sungurtekin et al has defined wound infection as inflammation or purulent discharge found at the surgical incisional wound with or without positive swab culture, not as cited by the authors. As a consequence, the references and citation numbering provided by the authors were likely to have been compromised.
