Joho, Mombasa's powerful governor, once again in anti-corruption investigators' line of sight

A team from the Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission (EACC) arrived in Mombasa at the end of September to open an investigation into the property contract made between Kenyan tycoon Suleiman Shahbal, former candidate for the Mombasa governorship, and Ali Hassan Joho, the current governor of the county, in mid- August. Shahbal's Buxton Point Apartments won a 6 billion Kenyan shillings (€47.5m) contract to build a real estate complex in the heart of the port city. This is largely financed by Kenya Commercial Bank, Absa Bank and the financial center Shahbal himself founded, the Gulf AfricanBank.
