Leith and Bradley's(1) work in the 1970s first applied principles of strength and endurance training to the muscles of respiration. A considerable body of research into respiratory muscle training (RMT) has since accumulated. To date, most evidence supporting RMT is derived from healthy and athletic persons and from cardiorespiratory patient groups.(2,3) A number of studies have also investigated RMT in patients with neurologic conditions, including stroke.(4,5
