What Is Binge Eating Disorder? Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is defined in the DSM-5 as recurring episodes of consuming a large amount of food in a short time, compared with what most people would eat in a similar period of time under similar circumstances. Patients feel a lack of contro during a binge and marked distress over their eating. BED is clearly distinguished from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa by the absence of any compensatory behaviour. According to DSM-5, binge eating should occur, on average, at least once a week for three months to qualify for the diagnosis of BED.
