Research about the prevalence of norovirus in Pacific White Shrimps (Litopeneaus vannamei) in Thailand.

Pacific white shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei) are increasingly replacing other shrimp species in aquaculture in Thailand. This species can be farmed due to its high salt and temperature tolerance not only in the coastal regions, but also in the inland brackish water ponds. Compared to other shrimps they offer the advantage of having a high and even growth, and a low susceptibility to diseases. This article reports on the extent of norovirus contamination in 240 samples of Pacific white shrimps collected in different regions of Thailand. Shrimp samples were examined for noroviruses by conventional reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and real-time PCR. The sensitivity and reliability of RT-PCR and real-time PCR in the detection of noroviruses in environmental, food and clinical samples are discussed..
