Despite widespread concerns about substandard practices in nursing and care homes, covering everything from resident safety to cleanliness, nutrition and staff training, the HSE is no longer proactively inspecting the health and social care sector, on the basis that "it is unlikely to be effective". In a recent feature (HSB 421 p.18), HSB questioned this decision, pointing to the weaknesses in the sector, such as training and staffing levels, which had been highlighted in recent prosecutions of well-known care home operators, as well as the roles played by other regulators.
