Wintershall gives up license

German upstream company Wintershall, operator of the offshore exploration block 11-12 in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea, is to give up the license to the block because of its poor exploration potential, the company said January 20. Wintershall has a 34% stake in the block, while Denmark's Maersk Oil holds a 36% share. India's ONGC Mittal, a joint venture between state-owned ONGC Videsh Limited and steel baron L.N. Mittal's investment company Mittal Investment Sarl, took a 30% stake in October 2007.
