Electric propulsion is growing at an average 12% a year, and although electrically-driven ships only account for 2% of the world fleet, they represent 11% of the orderbook, according to figures from ABB, a power and automation specialist. Rapid advances in system technology will provide many opportunities to use electricity on board marine and offshore assets, not only for propulsion but also for a wide range of auxiliary operations.
