New sturgeon hatcheries planned for Russian republic

The government of the Republic of Tatarstan, which is located in the eastern part of European Russia, has planned for construction of two sturgeon hatcheries with a total investment of close to RUB 2 billion (US$ 67 million), according to the head ofthe Federal Fisheries Agency, Andrey Kraini. "One hatchery will be stationary, while the other is going to be floating," he said, noting that the investment cost of the floating hatchery will be about RUB 900 million (US$ 30 million). "Both hatcheries will specialize in rearing sterlet {Acipenser ruthenus). This kind of fish is valuable for the region because it is not migrating, and will remain within the waters of Tatarstan," he explained.
