The use of enzyme biomarkers as pollution monitoring tools is well established and their use by CEFAS has been described in previous Aquatic Environment Monitoring Reports. This section reports the continued use of two important enzyme biomarkers in fish; i) hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) as a marker of exposure to planar organics (especially PAH and PCB), and ii) muscular ChE as a marker of exposure to neurotoxins (especially organophosphate and car hamate pesticides).
