Germany steel output dips 7 percent

Germany's crude steel production in June dipped 7 percent compared with the same period in 2002, or 7.7 percent from May 2003, according to the Federal Statistics Office. Total crude steel output from the country's steel mills for the month was 3.62 million mt. Production has been affected by the general economic malaise in Germany, as well as a brief strike in the former East Germany, the statistics office added. In the former West Germany, crude steel production slid 6.7 percent in June to 3.11 million mt compared with the same period last year, or 7.2 percent from May this year. Output from the former East Germany was 9 percent down on June 2002, coming in at just 0.51 million mt. However, for the first six months of the year, the mills together produced 2.6 percent more than the first six months of last year.
