Transport plan spending opens with £8bn wedge

The government has released £8.4bn of the £180bn public and private investment announced in last July's 10-year transport plan. This will see £4bn spent on roads, although £lbn of this was originally announced in November (see Highways news, December 2000). New light rail schemes, bypasses and relief roads and advanced bus systems are wrapped up in the package which covers five years' worth of the plan's £19.3bn public capital investment. This will allow English local authorities to implement their local transport plans.
