Newbuilding contracts: Containerships made up the lion's share of orders in the first month of 2022 contributing almost half of the January orderbook in value and gross tonnage terms. If war breaks out between Russia and its neighbour, our industry will find itself caught up in the crossfire, hopefully of the metaphorical rather literal variety. US-based maritime consultancy McQuilling Services has released one of the most bearish forecasts for the crude tanker sector this year, projecting average earnings for very large crude carriers at $2,500 daily amid scepticism that rates for all asset sizes can exceed cash breakeven levels in 2023.
