MLRS

The MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) is an artillery rocket system developed by the US Army for the delivery of large volumes of firepower in a short time against critical, time-sensitive targets. MLRS consists of a self-propelled launcher/ loader, disposable launch pod container, and rockets. The US Army initially acquired 754 M270 MLRS tracked launchers (including 58 for the National Guard) and the Marine Corps ordered a further 18. The Army began a second round of launcher acquisition in FY98 which added 979 launchers (with final procurement in FY03) for a total of 1,733. The Army began acquiring the lighter Ml 42 HIMARS truck launcher in FY03 with an objective of 888 launchers at a cost of $2.9 billion, subsequently reduced to 375 at a cost of $1.7 billion. Army orders for the MLRS rocket have totaled over 555,000.
