This work underlines negative factors regarding the future of antibiotics,development of resistance,increasing hospital infection and presence of barriers to the development of newer drugs.It highlights the role of new approaches to overcome the risk of the"end of the antibiotic era".Current situation.-Several factors have contributed to frighten industry,physicians,patients,hospital personnel and health Ministries about the future of antibiotics.Despite development of many new drugs during the last 20 years,increasing resistance to fluoroquinolones,spread of ESBL producers,even carbapenems inefficient in treating carbapenemase producers are just a few examples of the current situation.Proposed Solutions.-In order to overcome the high risk of"a world without antibiotics",public funding is necessary.It should create public libraries of new agents,using new techniques for efficient screening of natural products.The role of biotech companies in discovering new targets and new products should also contribute to"fill the pipeline".In addition,improved diagnostic methods such as PCR-based tests may improve appropriate use of antibiotics.The immunomodulatory agents,new targets and new antibiotic classes may contribute to continue medical advance in treating infectious diseases.
