This paper achieved its aim. It should assist preoperative counselling with respect to carpal tunnel decompression.I would add from my personal experience that operating on both hands simultaneously is a predictor of a poor short term outcome. On the rare occasions I have allowed myself to be persuaded to operate on both sides at the same time, patient satisfaction has been much less than usual. However, this may depend in part upon the personalities of those who do not easily accept conservative advice.
