US may struggle with chip transparency drive

Criticisms levelled at the US government's efforts to gather granular global data about the semiconductor industry — to improve transparency and enable more targeted solutions to the global chip shortage — underscore how sensitive these supply chains are and how challenging it will be to strengthen global co-ordination. The US Industry and Security Bureau issued the survey late last week. It is referred to as a “voluntary survey of industry participants to both diagnose chokepoints in the supply chain and offer firms data that can help them adapt their production processes to adjust to the supply shortage”. But the granularity of the questions has drawn criticism from several observers in related Asian markets who consider it an overstep.
