Lim Ki-tack to take IMO top job

Korea's Lim Ki-tack has been elected as the new IMO secretary general,taking overthe role from Koji Sekimizu on 1 January 2016. He will hold the position for an initial four year term. The elections, which took place on 30 June saw Ki-tack go head-to-head with Denmark's Andreas Nordseth in the final round of voting. The other candidates that were eliminated were Cyprus' Andreas Chrysostomou, Philippines' Max Mejia, Kenya's Juvenal Shiundu and Russia's Vitaly Klyuev. Ki-tack is presently CEO and president of the Busan Port Authority, but has long been involved in regulation-particularly with regard to maritime safety. He announced a four-pronged approach for histenure as IMO secretary general: 1. Focus on implementation: Looking at application and implementation of IMO regulation. 2. Enhanced capacity building: Looking for closer cooperation between stakeholders such as those in funding (World Bank, UN Development Programme, etc) and the wider shipping industry. 3. Less burden, enhanced service: Constant revisions to systems and IMO functions so as to stay relevant.
