摘要

I've long advocated improving the working lives of crew. In my December 2014column I pointed out that life at sea compares very unfavourably with an on-shore career. Recruitment expert Alasdair MacMillan expands on the point in this month's Wavelength, calling for industry to group together to combat the skills shortage. The fact is that younger generations have more honed social and emotional needs and we must cater to these. As if in answer to this call, charity Sailor Society joined hands with a number of owners to launch an initiative to tackle stresses at sea including mental health, fatigue and isolation. 'Wellness at Sea' reminds us that seafarers are individuals with diverse needs and emotions rather than just automatons that perform their duties. It is a step up from the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), which set the tone for a cultural change in the way operators manage their employees.
